You don’t have to take the boat to visit this special island. The former island of Wieringen was an island for 800 years. Due to the breaches of the Zijpe, the Heersdiep and the Marsdiep it became isolated. Reclamation was not possible. The island existence ensured that shipping and fishing became very important. Fishing was done on the North Sea and the Zuiderzee. The rolling landscape, the differences in height and the distant view over the Wadden Sea. This makes Wieringen special.
You imagine yourself in ancient times and discover innovators. From tradition to innovation and from entrepreneurs to historical landscapes and nature reserves with many bird species. When you wander along the winding paths and climb a hill you will see special Wadden skies here. Wieringen is a former Zuiderzee island and does not have beach ridges, beaches or dunes like the Wadden Islands.
